Frequently Asked Questions

Your course, along with your training manual you will receive at your first class, follows a gradual process of learning basic ballet steps which will be repeated each week as you build up your knowledge and ability.  Each class starts with a basic warm-up, and then you’ll be taken through each exercise slowly.  You then repeat the exercise with the accompanying music.  You can ask questions before or after the exercise (it’s usually a bit hard to ask when the music is playing though!) You’ll also get to see little snippets of ballets which show the steps you’re learning – sometimes a picture really is worth 1000 words.

Classes are held at King George Hall, 4A Koongarra Court, Magill 5072. There is plenty of free parking available onsite.  The closet bus stops are Stop 23 – Moules Rd and Stop 24 – Glen Stuart Rd.

Most students start off in a pair of cotton socks which will protect your feet and allow you to perform the ballet movements.

If you decide to upgrade, Simply Ballet has ballet shoes available for sale at the studio or you can pick up some from your local dancewear store. If you already own ballet shoes, jazz shoes, gymnastic shoes etc. then you can wear those!

No. You’re never too old, too unfit, or too uncoordinated to start learning ballet. We promise.

Your Training Manual was written specifically to cover the content in our Introduction to Ballet course, plus more! It covers all of the steps learnt during the course with photographs to demonstrate and written explanations so you can practice at home.  It also contains information on basic ballet positions, posture, and safe dance practices.

There is no official dress code in the Open Division at Simply Ballet – so, wear whatever you feel comfortable in.  Most people start in activewear or clothes that will allow your body, arms, and legs to move freely and doesn’t cover your feet such as shorts, leggings, or footless tights and a fitted T-shirt or singlet

If you already have dancewear, whatever combination and colour of leotard, skirt, tights/socks etc. you already own is perfect!

Classes and exercises can be adapted in most circumstances to accommodate a variety of conditions including pregnancy.  Please advise your teacher of any pre-existing conditions or risks that might affect your participation in class.  You are always welcome to work at your own level within the class structure and teachers can provide alternative content if asked.  If in doubt, you should always seek professional advice from your healthcare provider.

This ballet specific body conditioning program uses fit balls and resistance bands to train “muscle memory” for ballet technique.  The program targets the key areas of technique required for ballet – core strength, turnout, foot and arm strength, and jumping.  Most exercises are done in a non-weight bearing state and can be adapted to your own fitness level.

Our Open Division classes are designed for students 18+.  That said, we’re not checking ID at the door…. Simply Ballet has a huge range of ages from early 20’s through to dancers in their 80’s so it’s unlikely you’ll be the odd one out.

(And yes we mean it – you really never are too old to start learning ballet!)

Simply Ballet was originally created for adults who wanted to learn ballet.  Simple.

Founded in 2011, Simply Ballet came about when a group of friends struggled to find a ballet class where they felt at home.  Adult ballet classes seemed to be an afterthought for most dance schools, and were not taken seriously by many.  What they wanted were classes where they could steadily progress their technique, learn with purpose, and feel like they were achieving.

Simply Ballet was created to fill this void.  Since then, Simply Ballet has grown to offer a variety of levels and courses to suit all kinds of learners, however – we still have a special spot for adult ballet.  So, we look forward to dancing with you!

What makes Simply Ballet different?

In fact in every way Simply Ballet tries to be there for you as an adult learner.

Having a goal and a sense of achievement as your ballet journey progresses is a big part of our philosophy and as such, Examinations and Class Awards can be undertaken through the Royal Academy of Dance.  Through this experience, many adult students have found a sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction in their studies of Classical Ballet.
